This is a very common question that we get asked.
The official answer is that you should keep all of your ID documents up to date. However, the only way to do this is by going through the same steps that you went through to get your card in the first place (appointment at the immigration office etc.). If you are a British resident, it will be compulsory to change your green residency card for a T.I.E. card (click here for more info).
Saying that, in our experience, we have never come across a situation or application in which the authorities ask for your residency card as proof of address. They will always ask for your padrón certificate.
You can get your padrón certificate from your town hall and it is very important that you update this if you move house.
